Course Description

Join us for a conversation with Riikka Salonen, Managing Director of Health Equity at BCT Partners. Riikka is a seasoned professional with nearly three decades of dedicated experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, access, and intercultural awareness. In this session, we will delve deep into the fabric of allyship and the dynamics of power within our communities. This engaging conversation is designed for everyone—leaders, employees, and community members—who wish to foster a deeper understanding of how to be impactful allies.

This course begins with an introduction to the "Seven Types of Allyship" framework, featuring roles such as Sponsor, Champion, Advocate, Amplifier, Scholar, Upstander, and Confidant. Each of these roles highlights specific actions and attitudes that support and elevate others, ensuring that their voices are heard and respected. After exploring these roles, we'll introduce the "Intersectionality Wheel of Privilege." This tool helps us understand the social identities that influence our capacities to make decisions, shape opinions, exert influence, and effect change.

Join this engaging discussion to examine how these identities can enhance or limit one’s ability to act as an effective ally in various contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize and apply the seven types of allyship to support others

  • Determine the influence of social identities on our ability to be allies

  • Identify strategies for using the Intersectionality Wheel of Privilege to recognize and act upon our own areas of influence and responsibility
